Tutzing Priory

In 2017, as we look back upon 130 years of our history, there are more than 1300 women living as Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing.

Our history

The Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing was founded in June 29, 1884, incorporating the houses founded on the vision of Andreas Amrhein (1844-1927), a monk of Beuron Abbey at Reichenbach. Fr. Amrhein found the men and women religious orders aiming of which is to combine the faithful Benedictine way of life with activity in the mission field by evangelization to people who doesn't know Christ.

The men community started at Reichenbach, but the site was too remote, and in 1887 the community moved to St. Ottilien Abbey in Oberbayern. Women religious have formed part of the Missionary Benedictine enterprise from the beginning, based at first at St. Ottilien but the sisters developed independently and today form the Congregation of Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing.
